31-Oct-2024: End of Harvest, Halloween / Samhain

End of Harvest

A couple weeks ago we harvested the last of the pumpkins and took many of them to Capabu - the local organic shop in Millstreet who sell some of our produce. The pumpkins were much smaller than last year, most likely due to the colder temperatures and lots of rain. But they still taste good!

Marisa also harvested the last of the celery, tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, cantelope, beets, carrots, cauliflower, and more. Here are some pictures of the bounty:

Halloween / Samhain

Halloween and the tradition of carving pumpkins originated from Ireland where Samhain marks the end of harvest and transition to the darker half of the year. Traditionally Samhain is celebrated on 1-Nov and was co-opted by Christianity as All Saints or All Hallows day. Samhain is also the name of the month of November in Gaeilge (Irish) and Scottish Gaelic.

We also had some huge turnips this year and the kids carved two of them - seen here with some of the pumpkins before the carving started...
